NapMinder privacy policy
Last updated: 8 September 2026
This policy explains what personal data the NapMinder mobile app collects, why we collect it, who we share it with and the choices you have. NapMinder watches your train journey and wakes you before your stop.
Who we are
NapMinder is provided by Kuamka Ltd (“we”, “us”, “our”), a company registered in England and Wales under company number 07961814, with its registered office at 7 Brownlow St, Leamington Spa, CV32 5XH.
For anything in this policy, or to exercise any of your rights, contact us at privacy@kuamka.com.
For the purposes of UK data protection law, Kuamka Ltd is the data controller for the personal data described here.
What this policy covers
This policy covers the NapMinder app on iOS and Android. It does not cover any third-party service you reach from the app, or the wider kuamka.com website.
The short version
Your location never leaves your device. NapMinder has no user accounts, no sign-in and no backend server. It does not store anything about you anywhere but on your own phone.
The one exception is optional, anonymous usage statistics, which are off unless you turn them on, and which deliberately carry nothing about where you are or where you are going.
Location
Location is how the app works. With your permission, NapMinder reads your device’s location while a journey is running:
- While you are using the app, so it can show how far you are from your stop.
- In the background, while your phone is locked in your pocket, so the alarm still fires. On Android this runs as a foreground service with a visible notification.
We collect precise location. From it the app derives your speed, your distance from your destination, an estimated arrival time, and a short trail of the stations you have recently passed.
All of this is processed on your device and none of it is transmitted to us or to anyone else. There is no server to send it to. It is held only in your phone’s app storage so a journey can survive the app being closed or the phone restarting, and it is deleted when the journey ends.
You can revoke the location permission in your device settings at any time. Doing so stops the alarm from working.
No account, and no data we hold about you
NapMinder does not ask for an email address, phone number, password or name, and it does not create an account for you. We do not collect your contacts, calendar, photos, messages, browsing history or any payment information. The app contains no advertising and no third-party advertising or tracking software. We do not sell your personal data.
Your destination, your recent searches, your alarm settings and any journey in progress are stored on your device only.
Optional analytics
Analytics are off by default. If you choose to turn them on — in the final step of the app’s introduction, or at any time from the About screen — we use PostHog to understand how the app is used and whether alarms are firing reliably, so we can improve it. We have configured analytics to minimise data:
- A random identifier is generated on your device the first time analytics is enabled. It is not derived from any device or advertising identifier, and it identifies nobody.
- Autocapture, session replay and approximate-location lookup from network address are all disabled.
- Analytics data is processed in the European Union.
- The analytics software is not started at all until you turn the setting on, so nothing is collected or stored before you consent.
The events cover how the app is used and how well it works: that a journey started or ended, how the alarm behaved (whether it was acknowledged, escalated or snoozed), which permissions were declined, and whether the operating system shut the app down mid-journey. Alongside them we send a small number of settings and measurements, always as coarse bands rather than exact values — the country you are travelling in, your chosen wake-up time, roughly how long a journey was, and roughly how far from your stop the alarm sounded.
Whatever we add in future, these limits hold, because they are enforced by the app’s own code rather than by policy: we never send coordinates, station names or codes, search terms, any free-form text, or any device or advertising identifier. The country is derived from a station’s country code, never from its name.
If you turn analytics off again we stop sending events immediately, and the random identifier is discarded — turning it back on later starts a new one.
Lawful bases
Under UK GDPR we rely on the following lawful bases:
- To provide the service you have asked for — reading your location while a journey is running, so the app can wake you. This processing is necessary to deliver the app’s only function, which you choose to use.
- Consent — for optional analytics, and for the device permissions (location, notifications) that you grant. You can withdraw consent at any time by turning the setting off or revoking the permission in your device settings.
Who we share data with
Because your location never leaves your device, there is no location data to share.
Our service providers (sub-processors). We use these providers to run the app. They process data on our instructions:
| Provider | Purpose | Data involved |
|---|---|---|
| PostHog | Optional product analytics (only if you opt in), processed in the EU | Anonymous identifier and the product events listed above |
| Google Maps (Android) | Map rendering on Android devices | Map display data on your device |
| Apple Maps (iOS) | Map rendering on iOS devices | Map display data on your device |
We may also disclose data if required by law, or to protect our rights, users or the safety of others.
Where your data is processed
Optional analytics are processed by PostHog in the European Union. Everything else stays on your device. Where data is transferred outside the UK, we rely on appropriate safeguards such as the UK’s international data transfer agreement or adequacy regulations.
How long we keep it
- Journey and location data — held on your device for the life of a journey and deleted when it ends. Never sent to us.
- Your settings and recent destinations — held on your device until you change them or uninstall the app.
- Analytics — retained by PostHog in line with their retention settings (up to 90 days by default), and no longer collected once you withdraw consent.
Deleting your data
There is no server-side account to delete. Turning analytics off in the About screen stops collection and discards the anonymous identifier. Uninstalling NapMinder removes everything the app holds on your device.
If you have opted in to analytics and want the events already collected erased, email privacy@kuamka.com.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law you have the right to access, correct, delete or restrict our use of your personal data, to object to processing, to data portability, and to withdraw consent at any time. To exercise any of these, contact privacy@kuamka.com.
You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), the UK’s data protection regulator, at ico.org.uk.
Children
NapMinder is not intended for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, contact privacy@kuamka.com and we will delete it.
How we protect your data
The data that matters most — your location and your journey — never leaves your device, which removes most of the risk to begin with. Optional analytics are sent over encrypted connections (HTTPS/TLS).
Device permissions
The app asks only for the permissions it needs, and explains each one before asking:
| Permission | Why it is used |
|---|---|
| Location (while using the app) | Show how far you are from your stop |
| Location (in the background) | Keep following the journey while your phone is locked in your pocket, so the alarm still fires |
| Notifications | Deliver the gentle countdown and the alarm itself |
| Alarms and reminders (Android) | Schedule the backstop alarm that still fires if the system shuts the app down mid-journey |
| Ignore battery optimisations (Android) | Stop the system putting the app to sleep and missing your stop |
| Display over other apps / full-screen notifications (Android) | Show the alarm over the lock screen |
You can change any of these in your device settings at any time. Turning off location stops the alarm from working.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we will change the date at the top of this page. Significant changes will be highlighted in the app.
